Dalchini, a pan-Indian word for cinnamon meaning “Chinese bark,” is the UK’s first purely Indo-Chinese restaurant. Founded in 2000, it has spent over two decades bringing this vibrant cuisine to the West. In the late 19th century, Hakka Chinese migrants settled in Kolkata, introducing their distinctive cooking. In 1920, the Huang family opened the city’s first Chinese restaurant, first serving immigrants, then winning over locals. Inspired by these flavours, street vendors created their own interpretations, giving rise to modern Indo-Chinese cuisine. Combining Chinese techniques with Indian spices and aromas, this fusion delivers bold, unforgettable flavours. Today, tucked into a corner of London, Ni Fon Kitchen has opened its doors — a cosy Taiwanese tapas restaurant and bar, breathing the soul of an island that has always known how to make strangers feel like family. We brought Taiwan's beloved stews and street-side flavours and reimagined them as small plates — little gestures of generosity, meant to be passed across the table.
